Study Predicts Almost Two-Thirds of Today’s Jobs to Disappear by 2045 (What Countries Are Doing to Future- Proof their Workforce)

AM-blog-content- Study Predicts Almost Two-Thirds of Today’s Jobs to Disappear by 2045 - featured

A recent study from the University of Georgia (UGA) has emphasised the critical need for the United States to prioritise artificial intelligence (AI) education and workforce training. As AI continues to permeate various aspects of life and work, understanding how different countries are preparing their workforces could guide the U.S. in improving its own strategies.

The study reveals that nearly half of today’s jobs may vanish over the next two decades, while approximately 65% of current elementary school students (equivalent to primary school pupils in the UK) will eventually hold jobs that do not yet exist. These emerging roles are expected to require advanced skills in AI, underscoring the urgency of equipping future generations with the necessary knowledge.

Key Findings:
  1. Global Comparison: The research analysed national AI strategies from 50 countries, focusing on their approaches to education and workforce development. It found that only 13 countries prioritise AI workforce training and education highly, with 11 of these being European nations, alongside Mexico and Australia.
  2. U.S. Standing: The United States was classified as having a medium priority for AI education and workforce training. This designation reflects a less detailed approach compared to countries that ranked higher in their prioritisation of AI competencies.
  3. Focus on Skills: The study emphasises the importance of not only teaching technical AI skills but also developing “soft skills” such as creativity, collaboration, and communication that cannot be replicated by AI. “Human soft skills…cannot be replaced by AI,” stated Lehong Shi, the study’s author and assistant research scientist at UGA.
  4. Lifelong-Learning Initiatives: Some countries, like Germany and Spain, are adopting a lifelonglearning approach, encouraging interest in AI from an early age. Spain has even begun teaching AI-related skills to preschoolers, showcasing proactive measures in education.
  5. Need for Comprehensive Strategies: The findings indicate that while many nations are investing in AI education, the U.S. must enhance its focus on comprehensive workforcetraining programmes. This includes not only integrating AI skills into curricula but also ensuring that training reaches vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and unemployed.

Overall, the UGA study calls for a reevaluation of how the U.S. approaches AI education and workforce preparation, highlighting the necessity for a more robust and inclusive strategy to ensure future competitiveness in an AI-driven economy.
