A recent report from the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University underscores the significant influence of air quality on early childhood development and health. Published on May 20, 2025, the report emphasises that poor air quality can adversely affect brain development, leading to long-term health issues for children.
Key findings from the report include:
- Cognitive Development Risks: Exposure to air pollution in early childhood is linked to cognitive impairments, including reduced IQ and attention deficits. Children living in areas with high levels of air pollution are at a greater risk of experiencing developmental delays.
- Health Consequences: The report notes that poor air quality can exacerbate respiratory conditions, such as asthma, which can further hinder children’s ability to engage in physical activities and social interactions. Approximately 1 in 10 children in the U.S. suffers from asthma, with air pollution contributing to this statistic.
- Critical Developmental Periods: Early childhood is a crucial period for brain development, and exposure to harmful air pollutants during this time can disrupt normal growth processes. This disruption can lead to lasting effects on emotional and behavioural health.
- Strategies for Improvement: The report offers actionable strategies for improving indoor air quality, such as using air purifiers, ensuring proper ventilation, and reducing sources of indoor pollution like tobacco smoke and certain cleaning products.
- Community Action: The report calls for increased community engagement and policy efforts to monitor and improve air quality, particularly in vulnerable neighbourhoods where children are disproportionately affected.

Dr. Jack P. Shonkoff, the director of the Center, emphasises the importance of addressing air quality as a public health priority. “Protecting children from the harmful effects of air pollution is critical to ensuring they have the best possible start in life,” he stated.
This report serves as a vital reminder for parents, educators, and policymakers to prioritise air quality in efforts to promote healthy development and well-being for children.
