Losing a Parent Linked to Higher Risk of Bullying in School-Aged Children

A recent study conducted by researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health has highlighted a troubling connection between parental bereavement and the likelihood of children being bullied at school. Published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, the research surveyed over 21,000 children in China, revealing significant insights into how the loss of a parent can impact a child’s social experiences.

Key Findings from the Study:

  • Increased Risk of Bullying: The study found that children who experienced the death of a parent were more likely to become victims of bullying. Among the surveyed participants, over 15% reported being bullied, while nearly 3% had suffered the loss of a parent.
  • Demographic Variations: The risk of bullying varied significantly based on several factors:
Age and Gender: Adolescents aged 13-17, particularly girls, were identified as being at a higher risk of bullying following the death of a parent.
Geographical Differences: Children residing in rural areas showed a heightened risk of bullying compared to their urban counterparts.
Type of Parental Death: The study indicated that the death of a mother raised bullying risks specifically among male youth, suggesting that maternal support plays a protective role in their lives.
  • Global Context: While the study primarily focused on data collected from 2019 to 2021, it is crucial to note that an estimated eight million children worldwide under the age of 18 have lost a parent or primary caregiver due to pandemic-related causes. In the United States, over 4% of children aged 17 and under had lost at least one parent by 2021.
  • Need for Supportive Interventions: The researchers stress the importance of developing tailored support systems for bereaved children. Dr. Ziming Xuan, the study’s senior author, emphasised that “effective interventions to reduce the risk of school bullying among bereaved children should be multi-layered and long-term,” including personalised counseling and active involvement of remaining caregivers.

The findings of this study underscore the critical need for schools to create empathetic environments that recognise and address the challenges faced by children who have lost a parent. Training educators to identify signs of grief and vulnerability can foster resilience and reduce the risk of bullying.
