Experts Urge That Protection Is Needed for Adolescent AI Users

A recent report from the American Psychological Association (APA) emphasises the urgent need for protective measures for adolescents engaging with artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into teenagers’ daily lives, concerns about psychological risks and ethical implications are rising.

The report, released in June 2025, highlights that nearly 80% of teenagers are using AI tools for homework, social interaction, and entertainment. However, the rapid adoption of these technologies has raised alarms among mental health professionals regarding the potential impact on youth well-being.

Key Findings from the report include:
  • Psychological Risks: Over 60% of mental health professionals surveyed expressed concerns that AI interactions could negatively affect adolescents’ self-esteem and social skills. The report indicates that reliance on AI for social engagement may hinder the development of critical interpersonal skills.
  • Exposure to Misinformation: Approximately 70% of respondents noted that teens are at risk of encountering misinformation through AI platforms. The report calls for enhanced education on media literacy to help adolescents navigate and critically assess the information provided by AI tools.
  • Data Privacy Concerns: The report reveals that 65% of parents are worried about their children’s data privacy when using AI applications. As AI tools often collect personal information, the APA urges developers to prioritise transparency and security in their technologies.

In light of these findings, the APA recommends several strategies for protecting adolescents:

  1. Education on Safe AI Use: Schools and parents should collaborate to educate teens about the ethical use of AI and the importance of verifying information sources.
  2. Monitoring and Guidance: Parents and guardians are encouraged to monitor their children’s interactions with AI technologies and provide guidance on healthy usage patterns.
  3. Policy Development: The report advocates for policymakers to establish regulations ensuring the ethical development and implementation of AI technologies, prioritising the safety and privacy of young users.

Dr. Lisa H. Jay, a co-author of the report, emphasised the importance of proactive measures: “As AI continues to shape how adolescents learn and interact, we must ensure that they are equipped to navigate these technologies safely and responsibly.”

The APA’s report serves as a critical call to action for parents, educators, and policymakers to work together in safeguarding the mental health and well-being of the next generation as they engage with AI.
