At Harrow Bangkok, we are always looking for ways to provide our students with enriching, hands-on learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Over the past four years, one of the most exciting initiatives we have developed in Bangkok is with Global Reef and Marine Biologist Piers Baillie. A collaboration that has had a profound impact on our students’ understanding of marine conservation and steps that we can take to action some of the problems that we face in this modern-day world.
Through this partnership, our students take part in engaging workshops that explore the challenges facing coral reef ecosystems. But this isn’t just about learning in theory. Our students learn to take real action. By designing and constructing prototypes of artificial reef structures, which are later deployed at a designated restoration site on Koh Tao in Thailand. They are directly involved in efforts to restore marine habitats. As Piers Baillie puts it, “The collaborative efforts between Global Reef and Harrow demonstrate the power of education and community involvement in marine conservation.”
Before reaching this stage, our children embark on an immersive journey into the world of underwater marine life, exploring its wonders while examining the significant threats it faces. This experience is closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goal of Life Below Water, fostering a deeper understanding of the need to protect our oceans and their ecosystems. The entirety of this unit is taught hand in hand with our form teachers and Piers providing support and expertise.
IMMERSIVE LEARNING: EXPLORING LIFE BELOW WATER
What makes this initiative so special is the way it sparks innovation and ownership among our students. The artificial reef structures they have designed now support over 1,000 corals, fostering biodiversity and providing homes for marine life. Seeing their work makes a real difference and inspires them to think critically about environmental stewardship. One of our Year 2 students put it best: “Working with Piers was so much fun. When I go to Koh Tao, I want to see what we did and help the animals!”
Beyond the science curriculum, this partnership has ignited a school-wide movement. Our youngest students have even led fundraising efforts, organising underwater-themed homemade fayre games to support reef restoration. It’s incredible to see how deeply engaged our students are in not just learning but taking meaningful action.
VIRTUAL REALITY: CONNECTING STUDENTS TO CONSERVATION
While the targeted year groups play a direct role in reef restoration, the impact of this initiative extends far beyond them. Students from various year groups have had the opportunity to observe and learn about marine conservation through cutting-edge technology. By utilising Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, children can check up on their adopted coral and witness its growth over time. This immersive experience enables students to stay connected with their contributions to the ecosystem, reinforcing the importance of their efforts even if they are unable to visit the reef in person.
Through these technological advancements, younger students who may not yet be directly involved in the construction of reef structures are still able to engage with the project in meaningful ways. They can explore the underwater world, monitor changes in biodiversity, and gain a greater appreciation for marine life. This integration of VR technology enhances their scientific curiosity and understanding, sparking interest in conservation efforts from an early age.

INSPIRING FUTURE CAREERS
One of the most valuable aspects of this partnership is the opportunity for our students to interact with a real-life marine biologist. Engaging with Piers Baillie allows students to gain insights into marine biology as a career, opening their eyes to the real-world applications of their learning. Having direct conversations with an expert in the field helps demystify scientific careers, making them more tangible and accessible for young learners.
Through these interactions, students are encouraged to ask questions, explore career pathways, and consider how they might contribute to environmental conservation in the future. This real-world exposure reinforces the importance of STEM subjects and demonstrates how passion and knowledge can translate into meaningful careers. By meeting professionals who are actively working to protect our planet, students gain a deeper appreciation for the possibilities that lie ahead and the impact they, too, can make.
TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES
For me, as a Science Lead, this partnership highlights the immense value of collaboration in education. This initiative is a perfect example of how partnerships can bridge the gap between knowledge and action, empowering students to become leaders in environmental conservation.
Looking ahead, I am excited to continue fostering collaborations that provide transformative learning experiences. Our work with Global Reef has shown that when students step outside the classroom and into the real world, they don’t just learn. They make a real difference.
