Why Music Matters More Than Ever in an Age of Upskilling

For centuries, the sound of music has been a defining thread of a Harrow education. It is the collective memory, from the reverberations of the famed Harrow songs to the vibrant ensembles in our AISL Harrow Schools today. As Principal Music Director for the AISL Harrow Schools, my vision and mission are clear: to plant a meaningful, lifelong seed of music in every student. Music education is not so much about nurturing only the gifted and talented, as it is about enriching and cultivating human beings for whom music becomes a source of joy, solace, and connection. Music is a universal language that binds our global community together, just as it has bonded Harrovians across generations.

Today, as the discourse rightly focuses on upskilling and reskilling in response to AI’s rapid transformation of our world, we might ask: where does music fit? My answer is that it has never been more crucial. While AI can replicate patterns and generate compositions based on intelligence from the past, it cannot replicate the human soul that music guides, comforts, and expresses. Nor can it break boundaries and rules as boldly and ingeniously as giants like Beethoven, Wagner and Schoenberg did in the history of this art. In an age of technological reskilling, music offers what I would like to call, “sideskilling”. The profound, transferable competencies nurtured in the rehearsal room, practice studio and the performing stage are precisely the durable human skills needed to thrive and adapt in this changing landscape.

Through the disciplined pursuit of technical mastery, students learn grit and perseverance, the understanding that excellence is a journey of incremental progress. In an orchestra, a chamber music group or a rock band, they experience teamwork in its purest form by listening intently, supporting each other, and understanding that individual excellence must serve the collective good. A solo performance teaches confidence and the ability to deliver under pressure, while composition balances creative innovation with an understanding of structures, rules and traditions. Perhaps most importantly, collaborative music-making fosters compassion and deep interpersonal relationships, as students communicate not just with notes, but with empathy and shared purpose.

This belief in music’s transformative power is driving our most ambitious project yet. The establishment of The AISL Harrow Centre of Excellence for Music Education later in 2026. Conceived as an aspirational hub, its mission is threefold. To inspire students to reach beyond the familiar, to empower educators with cutting-edge pedagogy and shared best practices, and to incubate ideas that shape the future of music education globally. The Centre will bring the classroom and the world stage closer together, creating pathways for our students from their own practice rooms to international platforms.

In preparation for this, we are forging exciting partnerships with renowned international institutions and are in the planning stages for a landmark AISL Harrow Music Festival in 2027. More immediately, I am delighted to announce the inaugural AISL Harrow Piano Festival. This pioneering event will showcase the extraordinary talent across our network, connecting our communities through technology and artistry. Our selected pianists will perform a concert streamed live via Steinway Spirio pianos, simultaneously linking audiences at the Beijing Steinway Hall, Shanghai Steinway Headquarters, and Bangkok Steinway Gallery. It is a vivid first step in our vision of a seamlessly connected, musically brilliant AISL Harrow family.

As we look to a future of constant change, our commitment to music remains our constant. It is the ultimate upskilling of the human spirit, preparing our students not just with adaptable skills, but with character, resilience, and a profound capacity for feeling and expression.

“Music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable.” – Leonard Bernstein

It is this timeless, ineffable power of music that we will continue to champion, ensuring it remains at the heart of a Harrow education today and for the centuries ahead.
