1. The Need: Understanding the Challenge
Students today grapple with a kaleidoscope of pressures: academic expectations, transitions (going from school to university), social media and digital lives, global unrest, personal or family stressors. A number of findings underscore the size of the problem:
    • Students in higher education are increasingly likely to have poor mental health (anxiety, depression); for example, a review of students found that one in five had a current diagnosis and nearly half had experienced serious psychological difficulties.

        • Sustainability: It is crucial that the initiatives do not become a “one-off” and are instead ingrained into the institution’s culture and systems. New leadership, money or priorities can swirl around and disrupt momentum.
        • Measuring impact: Tracking and assessing such mental-health initiatives is fraught as well-being is multi-dimensional and it’s hard to ascribe changed behaviour to any one intervention.

        Developing a Well-being-focused educational ecosystem going forward, several themes emerge:

        • Whole-school change instead of piecemeal fixes: Schools should strive for profound cultural, climate, relationship and pedagogical shifts.
        • Student voice and co-creation: Providing students with a role in creating well-being supports increasing the relevance, treatment adherence, and ownership of strategies.
        • Technology and innovation: Not the magic bullet, digital tools (apps, telehealth, peer-support platforms) can supplement face-to-face support but always with an eye to equity and privacy.
        • Partnerships beyond the schoolhouse: Schools must forge relationships with families, community organisations, health services and policy makers to create a strong ecosphere of support.
        • Equity and inclusion: Customising support for different groups of students (neurodiverse students, LGBTQ+ students, students from underserved communities) will be crucial.

        We can no longer see the health and well-being of students as an add on as it is at the core of education in the 21st century. By cultivating a positive school climate, embedding social and emotional learning, wrapping around layered systems of support and prioritising relationships with families and communities, schools can establish environments in which students don’t just cope but also truly thrive. It takes more than one-time strategies to accomplish this; it demands a willingness to listen to what students themselves need, and be responsive when those needs change, as well as sustained cultural change. For educators and leaders, it’s an urgent and profound one: to value well-being as much as academic success, to consider mental health a collective pursuit rather than only a reactive measure and to surround every child and adolescent with communities of care. When we do this as a community-wide priority, not only do we create the conditions for whole child nurture, but we regenerate our educational purpose and craft systems that allow human thriving to be central.
