A recent study from Yale University has revealed that singing to infants can significantly enhance their mood, presenting an easy and effective approach for caregivers to support the emotional well-being of their children. Published on May 28, 2025, in the journal Child Development, the findings underscore the universal instinct of caregivers to sing to their babies and highlight the positive impacts this practice can have on family dynamics.
The study involved 110 parents and their infants, most of whom were under four months old. Participants were divided into two groups: one group was encouraged to sing more frequently to their babies, receiving tools such as karaoke-style instructional videos and infant-friendly songbooks, along with weekly newsletters filled with music integration ideas. Over the four-week study period, parents reported their babies’ moods and behaviors through randomised smartphone surveys.
Key findings indicated that parents who increased their singing reported a notable improvement in their infants’ overall mood. Not only did the frequency of singing rise, but parents also instinctively used music to calm fussy babies, demonstrating the intuitive connection between singing and emotional regulation. “When you ask parents to sing more and provide them with very basic tools to help them in that journey, it’s something that comes very naturally to them,” said Lidya Yurdum, a PhD student and co-first author of the study.
Despite not observing a significant change in caregiver mood within the study’s timeframe, researchers believe that the positive effects of improved infant mood could extend to the entire family. “Every parent knows that the mood of an infant affects everyone around that infant,” noted Samuel Mehr, the study’s principal investigator. If the enhancement of infant mood persists, it could lead to broader health benefits for families.
The researchers are currently recruiting participants for a follow-up study titled “Together We Grow,” which will explore the effects of infant-directed singing over an eight-month period. This future research aims to investigate whether singing can help alleviate stress or conditions such as postpartum depression and explore its potential benefits for infant sleep quality.
The study’s findings align with previous work suggesting that musical behaviors are a fundamental aspect of human interaction, serving as a vital form of communication between parents and their babies. As Eun Cho, a co-first author, stated, “This simple practice can lead to real health benefits for babies.”
